I have had the pleasure to visit The Great Smoky Mountain NP a number of times since I have retired. I have been through the Cades Cove section twice during the spring wildflower season, I've seen Fall foliage along the Blue Ridge Parkway and I have been through the Cataloochie area were there are elk. The mountains are nothing in height to compare with the Rockies, but there is a certain gentleness and serene beauty in the land to make it all worth the visit.

Notice that they are wearing electronic monitoring devices since they were re-introduced in the GSMNP.
Elk shed there antlers in the winter and regrow their antlers beginning in the spring each year.
All of these elk photos were taken in mid-April 2009.
This bull elk looks to be a little older and more advanced in his regrowth of antlers
A group of three elk.
Rhododendron in bloom. I haven't seen these northern cousins of azaleas in many years
Fire Pink
A great little (50 foot) waterfall along side the road through the Pisgah National Forest.
A little fall foliage on a foggy day in the Smokies
I was real lucky to get this pilated woodpecker photo.
I included a second shot for the bird lovers
I do like cardinals.
I found this redbud tree in full bloom alongside I-77 on the northern edge of the GSMNP.
A roadside creek dam on the Blue Ridge Parkway
Mabry mill is one of the most photographed sites in the National Park system.
Spring blooms along the Blue Ridge Parkway
A late summer day on the Blue Ridge.
